1. Compare and Contrast each documentary. What has changed from the first one (Growing Up Online) made in 2008 to the newer one (Digital Nation) filmed in 2010? How did what you watched in the two videos support your feelings about technology or how did it change your views? Both videos were very enlightening, being the mother of 10 year olds and living in a District that has just started a 2 – 8th grade BYOD Policy http://hooksett.k12.nh.us/districtdownloads/byod.pdf . Watching these videos created more of an awareness on my part of the downfalls of technology and how as parents and educators we need to be paying attention to our student’s lives. Since the making of Growing up On line technology has become more immersed in our lives. Research has been started on the effects of technology in our lives and students live. My feelings about technology have not changed after viewing these videos. It has made me more aware of the dangers of technology and how very important as a Future Educator teaching digital citizenship will be. It has shown the need to educate parents on what their children are doing online. The need for everyone to know what their Digital Footprint looks like and that of their children and students; if we teach students this it will create an awareness in our society of the downfalls of technology in our lives.

2. Your thoughts on multitasking. Do you agree? Can you multitask? Do you disagree with the video on the topic of multitasking? We are all guilt of it. It was very enlightening how the students in the documentary thought they were able to multi task and still function as a student. The Laptop has replaced the notebook in the classrooms of today but I believe with that has increased the distractions that students can have in the classroom. You can not be paying attention to the professor if you are reading on your friends post on Facebook, My space, Twitter. I found the students to think Digital Citizenship applied to others and not themselves. I agree with the Video but each person must find their own balance.

3. Is there an addiction happening in society today with technology or is it just a new way of living? Should we be concerned? I would not use the word addiction but the over use of technology in our society could become a problem if balance is not found. I believe that we all need to be aware that the use of technology can not replace human contact or using “good digital manners”.

4. Do video games serve a purpose in education or are they a waste of time?

I do believe the video games have their purpose in the class room.
http://www.sowashco.k12.mn.us/ro/pages/studentlinks/map/reading.htm, games can help increase reading abilities for Map Reading Tests, http://www.sowashco.k12.mn.us/ro/pages/studentlinks/map/reading.htm or Math Map Testing, and Study Island http://www.studyisland.com can help students prepare for NECAP testing by including the reward of a video game after questions are answered quickly.

5. Do you believe that digital tools such as goggle tools can save schools that are struggling? Yes, I do believe that they can help our struggling schools. I believe this because I am witnessing this happen in the school district that may children are enrolled it. The use of goggle tools helps educators share documents that already exist that have been created. It assists individual districts not having to recreate the wheel every time they are faced with a problem. It allows for collaboration between districts, states, and teachers.

6. Do parents of today have any idea what their kids are doing online? Whose job is it to teach them the safety and digital responsibility? Parents/Teachers/Community/Government??
Many parents do not have any idea what their children are doing on line. I think it is everyone’s job to teach safety and digital responsibility. Core Value 5 http://www.hooksett.k12.nh.us/corevalues.html of the Hooksett School District is “it takes a village to raise a child”. This is very true of teaching Digital responsibility and citizenships. Parents, Teachers, and Communities need to work together to learn and teach our students digital responsibility as we move through the 21st century.

 7. Are kids and adults today ruining their digital footprints by sharing too much information online without realizing that it may be detrimental to their future? Should they care? The introduction of Facebook and My space into our every day lives has created a situation where some people share too much of the details of their life. I think some people both kids and adults do not realize that what they are posting or saying to people does not go away. People do not realize what they say can be seen by future employers, future in laws, and law enforcement. A post on Facebook is not private. It is on their digital foot print and can help to form opinions of you in the future.  I think to some extent, we should be aware of what our digital footprint is and if we do not like things in cyber space about us work to create a better footprint.

 8. “Stranger Danger” and predator fears are often overblown by the media on shows such as Datelines “To Catch a Predator”. What are the real dangers of technology in this day and age? The real danger of technology in this day and age is that parents need to know what their children are doing online. Parents need to move the computer out of the child’s bedroom and into the main living part of the house. Parents need to be Facebook Friends with their children and have passwords. No passwords then no Facebook. The problem with Technology in this day and age is Parents need to parent their children. It takes a village to raise a child but it is not solely the villages responsibly to raise the child. Parents need to be parents and not their children’s friends. There is plenty of time in life to become friends with your children when they are adults.
